From IaaS to KaaS: Our SCS Journey Continues
Last year, we were already among the first three providers to receive the „SCS-compatible IaaS“ certification. This distinction confirmed that our ScaleUp Open Cloud ecosystem meets the Sovereign Cloud Stack’s requirements for interoperability, openness, and data sovereignty at the infrastructure level.
Today we're taking an important step forward: Our Managed Kubernetes is now officially certified according to the standard „SCS-compatible KaaS“ certified. This means we cover the entire cloud stack—from the virtualized server environment all the way to container orchestration.
What does „SCS-compatible KaaS“ mean?
The Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS) defines open, verifiable standards for sovereign cloud infrastructures. KaaS (Kubernetes as a Service) certification ensures that managed Kubernetes offerings also comply with these standards at the orchestration level. Specifically, this means:
- Standardized Kubernetes Interfaces: Customers can be confident that our Managed Kubernetes complies with the API and functionality standards defined by SCS—no proprietary deviations, no hidden lock-ins.
- Verifiable Compliance: The certification is based on regular, automated compliance tests. You can verify what is certified at any time.
- Quality, Not Dependence: Those who build on an SCS-certified Kubernetes platform aren’t tied down by proprietary quirks—but by true quality. That’s our goal: Customers stay because our performance impresses them, not because switching would be too much of a hassle.
- Full data sovereignty: Combined with our already certified IaaS layer, this creates a consistently robust cloud platform—from the hardware all the way to the container.
Why This Is Important to Our Customers
Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard for running containerized applications. At the same time, many vendors offer proprietary container solutions, which in practice lead to dependencies that make switching difficult and expensive.
This is exactly where the SCS-KaaS certification comes in. It is not a marketing label, but a technically verifiable quality standard. For organizations that rely on compliance, data sovereignty, and long-term predictability—such as those in the public sector, healthcare, or the financial industry—this certification is a decisive factor in choosing a provider.
With our now fully SCS-certified cloud platform – IaaS and KaaS – we offer our customers a seamless, open, and independent infrastructure: Made and operated in Germany, without any attempts to whitewash sovereignty.
Part of a growing ecosystem
The SCS community is growing. New providers are joining, reference projects are gaining momentum, and the market for sovereign cloud solutions is picking up noticeably. All stakeholders see the major hyperscalers as their main competition—not each other. The common goal: to establish a strong European alternative based on open standards and true interoperability.
The fact that SCS is now in the Germany Stack The fact that it is listed underscores the project’s growing relevance at the national level—as a recognized foundation for sovereign digital infrastructures in Germany.
We are proud not only to be part of this ecosystem, but also to play an active role in shaping it: As a member of the SCS Standards Forum We are actively involved in the further development of the SCS specifications. In addition, our cloud team is directly engaged in the community—through technical contributions, feedback from production operations, and a commitment not only to implement the standard but also to help shape it. As one of the first certified providers at the IaaS level—and now also at the KaaS level—we bear responsibility for an ecosystem that we want to strengthen together.
Conclusion
For us, SCS-compatible KaaS certification is more than just a certificate. It is proof that our Managed Kubernetes meets the high standards for openness, interoperability, and data sovereignty—and that this can be verified, not just promised.
For our customers, this means: container orchestration on a European scale, free from vendor lock-in and fully under our own control.
